SAFETY INFORMATION AND PROCEDURES
We have worked hard to ensure that we are one of the safest dive operators in Mozambique; our impeccable safety record is due to our safe diving policy outlined below. We are not trying to be pedantic, but rather, we believe that, if we can ensure your safety, then you can concentrate on relaxing and enjoying your diving.
DIVE PROCEDURES:
In the interest of safety we ask that all divers present their certification cards and logbooks on booking their first dive with us.If your card and logbook are lost, you will be required to do a Scuba Review with one of our instructors before diving with us.
If you have not dived in the last 12 months, we ask that you complete a Scuba Review to ensure that you are comfortable with emergency procedures and buoyancy skills. Before completing the Scuba Review, divers will be required to fill out the PADI Medical Questionnaire. If any condition on the questionnaire applies to you, you will need to bring a physicians letter stating that you are "fit to dive without restriction".
At least one Divemaster will accompany each group of divers depending on the size of the group.
A dive briefing will precede every dive and will include information on boating, entry, exit, launch, lost diver and emergency recall procedures as well as dive site descriptions, depths, times and interesting information on marine life.
All ocean dives are conducted from semi-rigid inflatable boats and follow drift diving procedures.
NEW PADI PROTOCOL
Due to a change in PADI standards, we may only do deep training as the 3rd dive of the Advanced course, therefore, for divers to dive all our deep reefs (deeper than 18m), they will need at least Advanced Qualification, or complete the Advanced programme here (NOT JUST THE DEEP ADVENTURE DIVE)
MEDICALS:
Because of our remote location we ask that all guests that would like to dive with us download and review the medical statement. It is for your safety and just a precaution to ensure that you have a great holiday and even better diving. Please take a moment to read the statement and if you find you can answer ‘yes’ to any of the conditions, please visit a diving physician for medical clearance. Please note, a ‘yes’ does not exclude you from diving, it is just a precautionary measure and for your safety. When you arrive for diving please bring a copy of your medical clearance for our records.
INSURANCE:
Barra Lodge is a DAN-Southern Africa Member. All our staff are trained in CPR, First Aid and Oxygen First Aid. We highly recommend DAN (Divers Alert Network) divers insurance please visit their website for more information: www.diversalertnetwork.org
COURSES:
Our safe diving policy, means that in open water training dives, student to Instructor/Divemaster ratio will not exceed 2: However if you would prefer one to one tuition, this will be happily provided.
Here at Barra Lodge we have the perfect environment, regards to conditions and depth, for all training courses and all levels of experience. We have a permanent buoy ready for use, for entry-level courses, that puts us on a sand patch for skill practise. This ensures that the coral reef nearby is protected and can be explored once skills have been completed.
PERSONNEL:
Our Skippers all have their commercial licences and have extensive experience launching dive vessels through the surf.
Our dive guides are PADI Divemasters or higher, and are fully trained in CPR, First Aid and Oxygen First Aid.
Our boats take a maximum of 10 divers
2 divemasters
1 skipper
We try and keep our maximum ratio of divers to divemaster is 6:1, ensuring that every diver will have a safe, relaxed and enjoyable dive. Should you be a bit nervous, please enquire about a personal Divemaster

We have three 8-metre semi-rigid dive boats each equipped with:
• Two 85 horse power Yamaha engines

Our hire equipment is meticulously maintained to the highest standard, and each BCD is fitted with a whistle and each buddy team is provided with an inflatable surface marker buoy.
GENERAL DIVING:
All our diving is no stop, we never exceed our no-decompression limits, we always do a 5 metre safety stop for a minimum of 3 minutes and we ask that our divers refrain from touching or teasing any marine creatures.

FACILITIES:
Our Dive Centre is located right on the beach and all our SCUBAPRO rental equipment is stored there and meticulously maintained. We have showers and toilets, kit-wash and drying areas and the whole centre is under shade. It has a fully equipped classroom, pool and equipment-in-use storage area.
Malaria Area/Malaria medicine and diving
Please note that we are located in a malaria area. It is advised that you consult your doctor about what malaria prophylaxis to take. LARIUM / MEFLOQUINE / MEPHLIAM ARE NOT SAFE TO DIVE WITH. Other than that, it is a good idea to bring along a supply of mosquito repellent for prevention
